Apple today announced a new service called Ping. It is a social networking site that is integrated with iTunes and is mainly related to music. Steve Jobs called it a “social network that’s all about music”. Ping has already got a customer base of about 160 million from the iTunes store. This may be a direct competition for Myspace, as Myspace focuses mainly on Music.
But Apple may become a potential enemy to the most powerful social networking site – Facebook. Ping works more like Facebook, twitter and last.fm put together. So people may (from now on) get confused, where to post their updates. Ping may not pose a serious threat to Facebook at this moment. The one thing that doesn’t exist yet is the ability to build applications that integrate with Apple’s new social network, however this is a first step and I believe this could become a much greater threat.
And when Apple’s Ping develop out with more features it may be successful in defeating facebook, which Google’s Orkut failed to do.
